Barbara M. Townsend

Barbara M. Townsend (Barby) of Savannah, GA, died August 31, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Barby was born March 8, 1939, in Lowell, MA., to the late Robert T. Morse and Barbara Macartney Morse.   She spent her early years in Lowell attending Rogers Hall Preparatory School before attending Skidmore College, graduating in 1960. She was a schoolteacher for several years before marrying Dr. Brian Bednarz in 1962. She had three children before her husband had an untimely death in 1973.

She is survived by her loving husband Al Townsend whom she married in 1974. Barby was an established artist specializing in watercolors and was active in The Landings Art Association.  She also was a lifelong Episcopalian and very active at St. Peters Episcopal Church on Skidaway Island, serving as it’s Senior Warden twice. She loved traveling the world with Al and their friends. She also enjoyed knitting, gardening, golfing and entertaining. Barby was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

Beside her husband Al, she is survived by her brother Bob Morse (Joanne) and her children Stephanie Stoddard (Tom), Jennifer Cruger (Glenn) and Brian Townsend (Megan) and six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.  Burial will be in the church garden.  A reception will be held at the church following the service.
